30 January 2010 - Bothal, Northumberland.
There was more snow in South East Northumberland today, but the skies cleared and it became another lovely winter day.
We decided to walk to Bothal again and stopped on the way to photograph a view across the fields that we have taken many times. Today there were lots of tracks in the snow which looked as if some dogs had been having a good romp, as seen in the first photo below.
When we got down to the river we found the road over the bridge to Hepscott and Guide Post was closed to traffic again. Ice, on the other side of the bridge seen in the second photo was probably the reason.
We walked along the path through the woods towards Morpeth, seen in the next four photos. After a while it became it's normal muddy state so we returned the way we came.
28 January 2010 - Simonside Hills, near Rothbury, Northumberland.
This morning we went walking in the Simonside Hills near Rothbury. The forecast was for sunny weather, but it was wrong, as the photos show, just a few sunny intervals. It was still very pleasant walking though, as there was still snow on the higher ground and it was deep in places.
The first two photos below are views taken along the track from the car park leading up to Simonside. We call this place "the corner", when you walk round it an immediate difference in temperature is often felt in both directions.
The third photo is a view of the path to Selby's Cove, a few steps along here to take photos and we sank knee deep in the snow. The fourth photo is a view of the path to Ravensheugh which was also still covered in deep snow.
The fifth photo is a view of the track to Harwood Forest and the last photo is a view of snow covered Simonside seen from the track.
08 January 2010 - Blyth, Northumberland Coast.
This afternoon we visited Blyth to take more snow photos - this time along the beach to Seaton Sluice.
The snow, while not as deep as inland was still nice and crisp on the promenade, beach and dunes, making for pleasant walking in the low afternoon sun.
The first two photos below are views along the snow covered promenade, followed by a view looking down to the beach huts, which added some colour to the snowy scene.
The fourth photo is a view along the snow covered beach and dunes followed by a view towards the headland at Seaton Sluice, with foam made on the beach by the waves. The last photo is a view towards the piers as the setting sun turned the sky a lovely pinkish red for the second day in a row.
07 January 2010 - Bothal, Northumberland.
We walked to Bothal again today on another sunny afternoon. This time we went to the weir and the woods along the footpath to Morpeth, where the snow was still deep and crisp. Few people had been along this path but animal tracks were everywhere, ranging from foxes to deer.
The first photo below is a view along the still snowbound and icy road from Pegswood to Bothal. The next two photos are roadside views taken in sunshine on the way to Bothal and under a red sky at sunset on the way back.
The fourth photo is a view of the huge icicles that were hanging from the rock face at Bothal Weir, the largest we have seen for a long time. The last two photos are views along the footpath to Morpeth alongside the River Wansbeck, which was starting to freeze over, upstream from the weir where it is slower moving.
06 January 2010 - Bothal, Northumberland.
This afternoon we went for a walk in the snow through the fields from Pegswood to Bothal. The snow was quite deep in the fields, but crisp and very pleasant for walking.
The first photo below is a view of the snow covered East Coast Main Line at Pegswood with heavy snow clouds in the distance over the coast. The second photo of horses feeding was taken from the footpath through the fields.
The next three photos are views of the deep snow covered path through the fields down to Bothal Village. The last photo is a roadside view taken as the sun was setting and the sky was changing colour.
05 January 2010 - Morpeth, Northumberland.
This morning we had to visit Morpeth so we took a compact camera and walked along the river through Carlisle Park while we were there. The snow was thick and the sun shone brightly - a perfect winter day.
The first three photos below are views of St. George's Church, Telford Bridge taken from different locations along the River Wansbeck.
The fourth photo is a view along the river and promenade taken from the south side of Elliott Bridge in Carlisle Park.
The last two photos are views of snow covered Morpeth Stepping Stones and some of the many birds that were gathered just downstream including some Gooseanders.
03 January 2010 - Blyth, Northumberland.
This afternoon we visited Blyth for a walk along the South Beach. There wasn't as much snow as we thought there might be, but it was very cold and icy, with the car park resembling a skating rink.
The first photo below is a view from the promenade to the piers with a snow shower moving in from the sea. The second photo is a view between the piers where the gate to the harbour has now been completely barricaded with storage containers. The third photo is a view of a small cargo ship moored in the South Harbour.
The fourth photo is a bleak looking view along the snowy beach at sunset, but the cold didn't seem to be stopping the sea anglers, many of whom were fishing from the west pier as seen in the fifth photo. The last photo is a view along the beach towards Seaton Sluice, taken after sunset.
01 January 2010 - Bothal, Northumberland.
On New Year's Day we woke to see that the heaviest snow of the winter had fallen overnight. It was still snowing heavily when we walked to Bothal to take plenty of photos while it lasted.
The first photo below is a view of the road over the railway at Pegswood Station, followed by a view of the Pegswood roundabout, both taken in heavy snow. The next two photos are views taken along the road to Bothal in quickly changing light conditions, as the snow stopped and the sky started to brighten a little.
The fifth photo is a view of Bothal Weir and the River Wansbeck, taken while the trees were still snow covered and before other peoples footprints appeared in the snow.
The last photo is a view across the fields to Bothal Castle, taken as the sun made a brief appearance through the clouds.
25 December 2009 - Amble, Northumberland.
This year we went to Amble Harbour for our Xmas afternoon walk, shortly before sunset. It was very cold with a biting wind and very slippery with ice on the pier, promenade and quayside.
The first three photos below are views taken along the pier as the sky took on a glow from the setting sun. The fourth photo is a view up the River Coquet towards Warkworth with snow covered hills on the horizon.
The last photo is a view of the little shore where a dog was enjoying itself and keeping warm by digging a huge hole in the sand.
23 December 2009 - Bolam Lake, Northumberland.
Today we visited Bolam Lake Country Park for a walk around the lake. It was a beautiful winter day with a few inches of snow and the lake was frozen solid, apart from a small area where all the swans and geese were congregated. The birds were gleaming in the strong sunlight.
The first two photos below are views from the north side of the frozen lake, followed by a view from the south side with the swans and geese in their "pool".
The last two photos are views of the swans and geese swimming between lumps of floating ice and walking across the frozen surface.
20 December 2009 - Bothal, Northumberland.
Today we walked to Bothal on a fine, sunny morning following overnight snow. There was less snow in this part of Northumberland than other parts of the county, but still enough to make side roads treacherous. Indeed the footpath and road approaching Bothal Village were very dangerous where water had been running off the fields and then frozen solid.
The first three photos below are roadside views between Pegswood and Bothal. The next two photos are views along the footpath through the fields from Bothal to Pegswood.
