Les + Jan Bell - Photographers Diary - June 2009

25 June 2009 - Eden Valley Walk, Cumbria.

This evening we walked in the River Eden Valley in Cumbria, following a circular route from Englethwaite Hall through the woods to the village of Cotehill, returning along quiet country roads.

The first three photos below are views across the valley where the Settle to Carlisle Railway runs. The next photo is a view of trees reflecting in a pond in the woods near Englethwaite Hall Caravan Site. The fifth photo is a view of St. John The Evangelist Church in Cotehill. The last photo shows a good old-fashioned road sign which also still bears the name of the long gone Cumberland County Council.

24 June 2009 - Silloth, Cumbria.

This afternoon we visited Silloth on the Solway Firth coast in Cumbria, another place we had never been to before. The town has fine views over the Solway Firth to Scotland and is very unusual these days as it has plenty of free car parks and toilets!

The first three photos below are views of Silloth Green, Christ Church and the cobbled main street. The next two photos are views along the seafront and Solway Firth followed by a view across the water to Scotland.

23 June 2009 - Gretna Green, Scotland.

This evening we visited Gretna Green in Scotland, as we had never been there before. The Old Smithy where weddings take place is also a museum and the surrounding buildings are shops and eating places. The kind of place most people either love or hate probably.

The first three photos below are views of the Old Smithy and surrounding gardens, followed by a view of nearby Gretna Old Parish Church.

12 June 2009 - Seahouses, Northumberland Coast.

After we visited Ross Sands and Bamburgh today we decided to stop at Seahouses to take a few photos around the harbour. Below are two photos showing the lighthouse and boats in the harbour.

12 June 2009 - Bamburgh, Northumberland Coast.

After visiting Ross Sands today we stopped at Budle Bay and Bamburgh to take some photos on the way home. Below are four photos of Bamburgh Beach, Castle and Inner Farne seen from the dunes followed by two views of Budle Bay at low tide.

12 June 2009 - Ross Sands Beach Walk, Northumberland Coast.

Today we went for a walk along Ross Sands at low tide towards Guile Point. Ross Sands is a superb beach that was almost empty when we visited, perhaps due to the quite long walk to reach it. The beach provides superb long distance views to Bamburgh Castle and Lindisfarne Castle.

The first photo below is a view north along the beach towards Holy Island followed by a photo of an old shipwreck, uncovered at low tide. The third photo is a view from the water's edge back to the dunes, some distance away.

The fourth photo is a view of the two navigation towers at Guile Point, followed by a view across to Holy Island and Lindisfarne Castle. The last photo is a view looking south to Bamburgh Castle and the Farne Islands.

03 June 2009 - Langlee Crags Walk, Cheviot Hills, Northumberland.

Today we walked to Langlee Crags, above the Harthope Valley in the Cheviot Hills. It was a day of cloudy skies with brief sunny intervals which provided some interesting patterns on the surrounding hillsides as pools of sunshine moved across them.

The first photo below is a view across the valley to The Cheviot followed by a view to The Cheviot from the top of Langlee Crags. The third photo is another view from the top of Langlee Crags to Broadhope Hill, Blackseat Hill and Cold Law.

The fourth photo is a view of one of Langlee Crags with the Cheviot and Hedgehope Hill seen on either side of it. The last two photos are views along the Harthope Valley and Harthope Burn from the valley side above Langlee and the bridge at Langlee.

01 June 2009 - Warkworth, Northumberland.

This morning we visited Warkworth for a walk along the River Coquet, through the village and past the castle. The weather was perfect and people were enjoying the sunshine, sitting along the riverside.

The first photo below is a view of Warkworth Village and Saint Lawrence Church. The second photo is a view of the River Coquet followed by a view of the old bridge and gate.

The fourth photo is a view of the path from the village to the castle, followed by two views of the castle from different locations.
