31 July 2009 - Blyth, Northumberland.
This afternoon we visited Blyth to take some photos of ships leaving and arriving at the port, for our Northumberland website.
A cargo ship, the Deo Volente was arriving loaded with containers and wind turbine sections. In the first two photos below it is seen entering the river and then in the third photo it was reversing into the south harbour. The fourth photo shows it passing a smaller ship, the Portalegre, which was in it's berth and making ready to leave.
The next five photos show the Portalegre leaving the south harbour and making it's way up the river to Bates, where it turned before returning down the river and leaving.

20 July 2009 - Elsdon, Northumberland.
This afternoon we visited Elsdon and nearby Winters Gibbet to take more photos for our Northumberland website.
The first two photos below are views of St. Cuthbert's Church, which is very old and believed to have been a resting place for the body of St. Cuthbert on it's way to Durham Cathedral. The third photo is a view from the village looking towards Landshot Hill, followed by a view from the car park near Battle Hill.
The fifth photo is a view of Winters Gibbet followed by a view towards the Cheviot Hills from the gibbet.
The last photo is a view of a traffic jam on the road to Morpeth - caused by a lot of slow moving sheep!

20 July 2009 - East and West Woodburn Walk, Northumberland.
This morning we visited West Woodburn, a small village on the A68 beside the River Rede, for a circular walk along the valley via East Woodburn. On the way we stopped near the Wanney Crags to take some photos in that area for our Northumberland photos website.
The first two photos below are views looking north along the River Rede north of Woodburn. Nearby, an old stone bridge crosses the river, now used as a bridleway, footpath and farm track. It must have been an important bridge at some time in the past judging by it's construction, but little seems to be recorded about its history. It is seen in the third and fourth photos below.
The fifth photo is a view of nearby Chairford Bridge followed by a view along the A68 at West Woodburn. The seventh photo is a view along the road from Knowesgate to Woodburn and the last photo is a view of Wanney Crags.

19 July 2009 - Cambois Beach Walk, Northumberland.
This afternoon we went for a walk along the beach at Cambois, between the River Wansbeck and the River Blyth.
The beach is very popular with dog walkers but like most beaches in Northumberland it always seems almost empty.
Below are three photos looking south towards Blyth, with the Alcan aluminium ore silos and the east pier wind turbines on the horizon. The last two photos are views looking north towards the River Wansbeck and beyond towards Newbiggin.

09 July 2009 - Walk to Bothal, Northumberland.
This afternoon we walked to Bothal after a few heavy showers had cleared, leaving some blue sky between the clouds that were still passing by.
Poppies had just appeared in a field near the Pegswood bypass, creating a good view when looking towards Bothal, as seen in the first photo below. The second photo is a view over fields looking towards the River Wansbeck Valley, followed by a view of another field with a huge purple border of thistles flowering.
The next photo is a view across the fields to the farm, followed by a view of Bothal Castle.

02 July 2009 - Amble Harbour Walk, Northumberland.
This evening we visited Amble on the Northumberland Coast, as we hadn't been there for a while. It was perfect weather for a walk around the harbour and pier after a fine day.
The first two photos below are views looking across the little shore to the pier and breakwater, followed by a view from the pier of the sun reflecting on the water with the moon rising on the left. The next photo is a view along the coast towards Pan Point, followed by two views along the quayside, which was almost empty with most boats out at sea.
