31 October 2006 - Amble, Northumberland Coast.
The last week has not brought many good opportunities
for photography, but with the start of a change in the weather it
looked like quite a good sunset was in store this afternoon.
We made a visit to Amble where the sea was rough and
it was very cold with a strong north wind blowing. There weren't
many people walking along the pier today and nobody was fishing.
Here are two views taken as the sun was setting
- the first shows the entrance to the River Coquet, very rough indeed,
while the second looking up the river presents a very different
scene.

23 October 2006 - Bothal, Northumberland.
A much brighter day today after a wet start, so we
went for a local walk to nearby Bothal to take some Autumn photos.
Some of the trees are yellow but most are still green.
Add to that the colour of the new crops sprouting in the fields
and you have a scene that in no way resembles anyone's idea of late
October in Northumberland!
Here is a photo looking up across fields from beside

22 October 2006 - Near Morpeth, Northumberland.
A visit to the countryside near Morpeth today on a
rather dull afternoon didn't provide much opportunity for landscape
photos.
However, Horse Chestnuts were falling in abundance
so the chance to try a bit of "Still Life" photography
arose, something we have rarely attempted.
Here is a shot with different textures - smooth
shiny Horse Chestnuts on rough tree bark.

And another - this time on fallen leaves.

19 October 2006 - Derwent Water, Cumbria.
On a wet day, we visited Keswick in the Lake District.
Later in the day we took a walk to Derwent Water lake shore.
This is a photo from the tourists view across the
lake to Cat Bells in late afternoon - there weren't many tourists
but the sun shone through the very dark sky for a moment to provide
a scene that could equally have been moonlight.

18 October 2006 - Carlisle Castle,
Cumbria.
Today we visited Carlisle Castle, where we hoped to
take some stock photos, but the weather ended that idea, so we just
took a compact camera and took photos for our websites.
Carlisle was a walled city and was taken by the Scots
during the Jacobite uprising only to be retaken after the Scottish
retreat across the border. Remaining Scottish soldiers were jailed
in the castle before meeting a very grizzly fate.
This photo shows the entrance to Carlisle Castle
under an overcast sky.

17 October 2006 - Eden Valley, Cumbria.
On a very overcast day we went for a late afternoon
forest walk in the River Eden Valley in Cumbria.
Reflections in a lake is the theme of this photo.

13 October 2006 - Ouseburn, Newcastle
upon Tyne.
A visit to Newcastle today to take photos around Ouseburn,
which is between the City Centre and Byker.
It was a very warm and sunny day, more like August
than October - shirtsleeve weather. The Ouse Burn runs through Gosforth
and Jesmond Dene before joining the River Tyne and many small boats
are moored here.
Here is a photo of the River Tyne where the Ouse
Burn joins it, with lots of colourful boats moored at the otherwise
empty quayside.

12 October 2006 - Home, near Morpeth
in Northumberland.
We were busy editing photos today and for the last
few days to catch up.
Tonight the sky turned very colourful as the sun was
setting, but there wasn't time to get out and about to take photos.
So instead, here is a sunset photo taken through
a window with a "point and shoot" compact camera.

10 October 2006 - Tynemouth, Tyne &
Wear.
This morning the weather forecast seemed good for
sunrise photos, so a visit to Tynemouth meant a 5am rise. Unfortunately
clouds rolled in to obscure the sun rising over the horizon.
Shortly after though, the sun shone briefly through
a break in the clouds to provide some orange sky.

09 October 2006 - Dunstanburgh, Northumberland
Coast.
We visited Dunstanburgh today to take photos of the
castle and coast. It was a sunny afternoon and the tide was high
with brisk waves rolling in.
On the return walk to Craster we witnessed a strange
sight - seabirds near the shore seemed in a frenzy as if feeding.
When we got closer there was a mixture of Gulls and Eider Ducks
- whenever a wave came crashing to the shore the Gulls took off
and circled before landing again and doing the same thing a few
seconds later when the next wave came. Meanwhile the Eider Ducks
casually surfed the waves like experts!
In this photo a pair of the Eiders are surfing
the crest of a wave while the Gulls circle above.

07 October 2006 - Amble, Northumberland.
Today was one of the highest tides of the year so
we visited Amble at high tide to walk around the harbour and take
some photos.
The water was certainly as high as we have seen it
and if the strong wind had been blowing onshore instead of offshore,
the pier would have been awash. Instead it was very calm as the
water lapped high up around the supports of the walkway.
In this photo the sun momentarily lights up the
end of the pier and breakwater below a very dark sky.
