31 May 2006 - Bothal.

A late evening walk to Bothal, near Morpeth in Northumberland wasn't intended for photography, however, a pocket compact camera produced this shot, "through the gate"

23 May 2006 - Tynemouth Priory.

Today we visited Tynemouth Priory and Castle to take some photos of the ruins and the surrounding coastline.

During the second world war a gun battery was built at the top of the cliffs in front of the priory to protect the River Tyne entrance from enemy ships.

One of the large guns remains in restored condition still pointing out to sea where many years ago it would have fired it's shells for miles over the waves.

Here is a photo of the gun with it's battleship grey paintwork glinting in the spring sunshine.

11 May 2006 - Morpeth, Northumberland.

A visit to Morpeth in Northumberland this morning to take stock photos of the Castle.

Since it was such a fine morning it also seemed a good opportunity to take some photos in Carlisle Park next to the Castle.

The area near the entrance opposite Morpeth Court always has very colourful flowers and shrubs.

10 May 2006 - Chesters Roman Fort, Chollerford, Northumberland.

After our visit to Belsay we moved on to Chesters Roman Fort near Chollerford. There is a small museum here with Roman artefacts and the excavated remains of the fort can be viewed.

This is also the place where the Roman Wall crossed the River North Tyne via a bridge.

This photo was taken looking along the River North Tyne towards Chollerford beside the north bridge abutment.

10 May 2006 - Belsay Gardens, Northumberland.

This morning we visited Belsay Hall and Gardens, a few miles north of Ponteland in Northumberland. As well as the hall and Gardens there is a castle and lake.

The Rhododendrons here are renowned as some of them flower even in winter in the quarry garden. Some are flowering now but the main show has not yet started although buds look as if they are near to opening.

The lake is very pretty and tranquil as this photo shows.

03 May 2006 - River Tyne, Newburn.

Today we visited the Tyne Riverside Country Park at Newburn, just west of Newcastle, to take photos for our Tyne Photos website.

We parked in the large car park beside the visitor centre and walked along the footpath on the north bank of the River Tyne towards Wylam and returned along the same route. This is a very pleasant walk, even though it starts beneath huge electricity pylons.

The path crosses from Tyne & Wear into Northumberland after a short distance, so some of the photos will be used in the Tyne Valley section of our Northumberland site as well.

An unexpected sight so far up the river was a pleasure cruiser taking passengers for a cruise on the River, presumably from Newcastle.

In this photo horses get on with the important business of eating and ignore their spectators in the boat.
