Les + Jan Bell - Photographers Diary - Sept. 2005

27 Sept. 2005 - Newcastle upon Tyne.

Today we visited Newcastle upon Tyne to take some photos around the city centre for our Tyne Photos Website. It was a very warm day, the streets were very busy and people were enjoying the sunshine on seats beside the Church of St. Thomas the Martyr and the Civic Centre.

Below is a photo of the War Memorial between the Civic Centre and Barras Bridge.

22 Sept. 2005 - Chillingham Castle, Northumberland.

Today we visited Chillingham Castle in Northumberland, reputed to be one of the most haunted castles in the country.

The castle is in a ongoing state of renovation, having been a shell not so many years ago. It is now a fine place to visit with many furnished rooms. The dungeons and torture chamber in particular, give an idea why this place is reputed to be so haunted. The well stocked gardens are also a delight to walk around.

Below is a photo of the castle taken from the path that leads out to the adjoining woods and lake.

22 Sept. 2005 - Langleeford, Northumberland.

After we visited Chillingham we went for a walk along the Harthope Valley at Langleeford in the Cheviot Hills, mainly to try some new walking boots on an easy stroll. The weather was still fine and we saw nobody, except sheep.

Below is a view looking across the valley to Long Crags.

16 Sept. 2005 - Pegswood, Northumberland.

Returning from a fine day out across the border to Jedburgh we witnessed a fine sunset with bright red cloud above a silhouetted urban landscape.

16 Sept. 2005 - Catcleugh Reservoir, Northumberland.

Returning from a visit to Jedburgh today we stopped at Catcleugh reservoir in Redesdale, Northumberland. This Victorian built reservoir is on the side of the A68 road a few miles from Carter Bar.

Below is a view from the west side of the dam beside the valve room, looking across the reservoir to the A68 which runs along the line of trees at the water's edge.

16 Sept. 2005 - Carter Bar, Scotland.

We stopped at Carter Bar on the way to Jedburgh today to take photos for our Borders and Northumberland photo websites.

Just over the border on the road to Bonchester Bridge is a great view for many miles over the hills around Hawick, Selkirk and beyond, as seen in the photo below.

16 Sept. 2005 - Jedburgh, Scotland.

Today we visited Jedburgh in Scotland, a small town just over the border. Jedburgh Abbey is one of the great Border Abbeys along with Melrose, Dryburgh and Kelso. All were burnt by English Armies and have been in ruins for centuries.

Below is a view of the Abbey looking across Jed Water.

13 Sept. 2005 - Haydon Bridge, Northumberland.

On the return journey from a visit to the Lake District we stopped off at Haydon Bridge to take some photos of the River Tyne.

Below is a view of the old bridge, looking towards the south bank of the river in the late evening sunshine.

13 Sept. 2005 - Keswick, Cumbria.

A visit to Keswick in the Lake District today on what turned out to be a dull but still pleasant day. We didn't go with the intention of taking photos but had a camera with us so we took a few shots anyway. Below is a view along Derwent Water and Borrowdale that has no doubt been photographed millions of times, but it still looks good even with cloud overhead.

12 Sept. 2005 - Border between Scotland and England at Deadwater.

Returning across the border at Deadwater near Kielder we took this photo of Deadwater Fell. The England / Northumberland sign is the one featured on the front page photo of our Northumberland Photos Website.

12 Sept. 2005 - Steel Road, Scotland.

On the return journey from Hermitage Castle to the border at Kielder we passed by Steel Road which crosses the old Waverley Line railway from Carlisle to Edinburgh. Below is view looking over the valley where Hermitage Castle is situated to the hills beyond.

12 Sept. 2005 - Hermitage Castle, Scotland.

We visited Hermitage Castle, an impressive fortress in the Scottish Borders near Newcastleton in the afternoon today. The castle is a ruined shell and restoration work was in progress when we visited, with scaffolding along one side.

We took this photo of the castle from across Hermitage Water where there is a suitable gap in the trees. There were picnic benches outside the castle which were completely out of character with this imposing and isolated castle, so we erased them from this picture.

12 Sept. 2005 - Newcastleton, Scotland.

We stopped off at Newcastleton in the valley of Liddel Water, en route to Hermitage Castle and walked around the village and riverside. Newcastleton is very pleasant place that we will visit again as it has a good caravan site.

Below is a view along Liddel Water to the village.

12 Sept. 2005 - Kershope Forest, Cumbria.

Kershope forest is in Cumbria, right next to the Border, we passed through it on our way to Newcastleton today and stopped for lunch at one of the picnic places, a sun-trap that was very warm.

Below is a view from the edge of the forest down into the valley of Liddel Water and Newcastleton.

12 Sept. 2005 - Gilsland, Northumberland.

Gilsland is on the border between Northumberland and Cumbria so we stopped here to take some photos for our Northumberland photos website.

Gilsland is a tiny and pleasant village beside the River Irthing, parts of which are in Northumberland and is the only River that passes through the county to the west coast.

12 Sept. 2005 - Haltwhistle, Northumberland.

This clock and bell caught our eye when we stopped in Haltwhistle today. It was above a traditional shop window canopy - an increasingly rare sight these days.

12 Sept. 2005 - Hadrian's Wall, Cawfields Quarry, Northumberland.

The first stop of a round trip across the Border to Scotland today was Cawfields Quarry on the Roman Wall. This was one of the places that stone was quarried for construction of the wall itself and is a few miles from Haltwhistle.

Below is a view over the lake and up to the wall.

06 Sept. 2005 - Spittal, Northumberland.

An evening stop at Spittal to take some photos on a warm evening after visiting Kelso and Berwick today.

06 Sept. 2005 - Tweedmouth, Northumberland.

On the way from Berwick to Spittal we stopped to take some photos at the jetty beside Tweedmouth Lifeboat Station. Below is a view looking across the river to Berwick Town Walls.

06 Sept. 2005 - Berwick, Northumberland.

We visited Berwick in the late afternoon to do some shopping and walk around the town and bridges. The views from the old bridge are great in all directions and to the north are dominated by the town hall clock, as seen in the photo below.

06 Sept. 2005 - Norham Village, Northumberland.

We stopped in Norham Village on the way to Berwick to take some photos for our Northumberland Photos website.

There is a very unusual clock in Norham on a street light pole, the only one we have ever seen, although there must be others. Below is a view of the clock and village green.

06 Sept. 2005 - River Tweed, Norham Bridge,Scotland.

After visiting Kelso today we followed the River Tweed through Coldstream before crossing into England at Norham Bridge. This is one of many fine sandstone bridges across the River Tweed and also one of the border crossing points on the river.

Nearby Norham Castle was once described as the most dangerous place in England due to it's position and the many battles fought in this area, but today it is a lovely, peaceful place.

06 Sept. 2005 - Kelso, Scotland.

Our main visiting place of today's outing was Kelso in Scotland. Kelso is a lovely town on the banks of the River Tweed and today was particularly pleasant in the very warm late summer sunshine.

Kelso abbey is one of the four Border Abbeys and like the rest is a ruin. The flowerbeds in the small park and war memorial next to it are immaculate and a credit to whoever looks after them. A very pleasant place to sit in the sun.

06 Sept. 2005 - Town Yetholm, Scotland.

After passing through Kirk Yetholm we passed though Town Yetholm on our way to Kelso. Next to an old red phone box is an old wooden bus shelter on the main road. They compliment each other but the modern litter bin spoils the scene!

06 Sept. 2005 - Kirk Yetholm, Scotland.

The first stopping point on a visit to Kelso today was Kirk Yetholm, just north of the border and the north end of the Pennine Way footpath.

Here is a photo of the very fine looking "Kirk", distinctly different in appearance from the many nearby English churches.

03 Sept. 2005 - Mitford, Northumberland.

A visit to Mitford today to take some photos in and around the castle ruins. There isn't much of the castle left but the nearby church is very fine and popular for weddings. It's steeple is seen in this view above the trees.
