Les + Jan Bell - Photographers Diary - May 2005

31 May 2005 - Amble, Northumberland.

On a very warm Spring evening we went for a walk around the harbour at Amble. Fishing and pleasure boats were coming and going, a typical scene at a harbour where there always seems to be something happening.

Below is a view towards the mouth of the River Coquet where a fishing boat is making it's way out to sea.

30 May 2005 - Bothal, Northumberland.

This afternoon we visited Bothal where the fields and hedgerows were a mass of colour, but not a place to be if you are allergic to the very strong smell of the crops.

Below is view along the footpath through the fields to Bothal, where, as usual, a machete is needed to cut a path along the right of way.

28 May 2005 - Chevington, Northumberland.

A visit to the location of one of the ugly scars on the landscape of Northumberland today - Chevington opencast mine. These mines have blighted the scenery for the last forty years or more and still continue to do so. This is a view from the road to Widdrington that passes over ;the haul road - not a pretty sight.

28 May 2005 - Linton, Northumberland.

A railway near the village of Linton that is part of a loop used to carry coal coal from the Widdrington opencast mines. We stopped to take some photos for the railways section of our Northumberland Photos website. This view was taken looking towards Ashington.

26 May 2005 - Newcastle upon Tyne.

On a bright sunny day we visited Newcastle to take some photos of the bridges for our Tyne Photos website. Below is a view north along the historic swing bridge - a marvel of engineering design working from hydraulics and the flow of the river to open and close.

21 May 2005 - Longhirst Station, Northumberland.

A circular walk to Longhirst Station today, on a rather dull day with rain threatening at any time. Not many photos taken, but this one of a Virgin train speeding across the level crossing at Longhirst will be used on the railways section of our Northumberland Photos website.

17 May 2005 - Bothal, Northumberland.

A walk to Bothal today to take more photos of the yellow fields and blue skies with white fluffy clouds. They may smell awful but these fields certainly look bright!

12 May 2005 - Crag Lough, Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland.

This evening we visited Hadrian's Wall for a walk along the wall to Peel Crag and Crag Lough from the car park at Steel Rigg. The trouble with visiting the wall for a walk is that like most of Northumberland you are faced with walking against the clock in fear of your parking ticket running out. We returned with five minutes to spare.

Below is a photo looking down onto Crag Lough from the top of the crags.

11 May 2005 - Nunriding, Northumberland.

An evening walk at Nunriding near Morpeth today, not with photography in mind, just a stroll. But the Gorse was pretty so here is a view we took over the fields looking towards Morpeth.

07 May 2005 - Hexham, Northumberland.

A business trip to Hexham in the Tyne Valley today provided an opportunity to take some photos for the Hexham section of our Northumberland Photos website. Hexham provides many opportunities for photography and the bridge over the railway provides a good vantage point for the station.

In the view below a train is just leaving the station on it's way to Carlisle.

07 May 2005 - Bothal, Northumberland.

Today was a day of very heavy rain showers with bright sun in between. These conditions often combine to provide very dramatic colours and contrast, especially above the yellow fields we have at this time of year.

Below is a view of one of those very heavy showers approaching rapidly and looking like the start of a tornado.

Another walk to Bothal today through the fields where horses and sheep graze happily together, as seen in the photo below.

04 May 2005 - Nunriding, Northumberland.

This evening we walked at Nunriding near Morpeth where the sun was fading but the sky was still blue overhead. This is a view looking south from Nunriding Moor.
