Les + Jan Bell - Photographers Diary - March 2005

19 March 2005 - Chipchase Castle, Northumberland.

Today we visited the North Tyne Valley in Northumberland. Chipchase Castle stands on the east bank of the River North Tyne along with it's tiny chapel. The castle is not open to the public so we could only take photos from the road using a long lens. Below is a view of the castle and chapel.

19 March 2005 - Chollerford, Northumberland.

A few miles downstream from Chipchase Castle is Chollerford, with it's bridge over the River North Tyne. This is close to the site of the Roman Bridge where the Roman Wall crossed the river at Chesters Roman Fort.

Below is a photo of the road bridge and village.

19 March 2005 - Ray Burn, Northumberland.

After visiting the North Tyne Valley we returned via the source of the River Wansbeck at Sweethope Loughs and made a detour to Ray Fell. There is a danger that giant wind turbines may be erected here in this unspoilt landscape, hopefully it will never happen.

13 March 2005 - Nunriding, Northumberland.

Today we visited one of our favourite local walking places for a circular walk around Nunriding Moor. Part of the little used footpath runs along the side of large open fields, muddy at times, but dry today. The trees were still bare but young crops were sprouting as seen in the photo below.

12 March 2005 - Simonside, Northumberland.

A walk in the Simonside Hills near Rothbury today. There was still some patches of snow about and a good covering still on the Cheviot Hills seen in the photo below from the seat and viewpoint below Simonside Crags.

06 March 2005 - Warkworth, Northumberland.

We visited Warkworth today for a walk along the River Coquet to The Hermitage and back. The Hermitage is on the other side of the river and is closed at this time of year, but the walk along the riverbank is always pleasant, if somewhat muddy in places.

Below is a view looking downstream from below Warkworth Castle towards the village.

03 March 2005 - Bothal, Northumberland.

This morning we woke up to a covering of snow after some heavy overnight showers.

The road from Pegswood to Bothal had been ploughed but had not seen much traffic and made for a very enjoyable walk in the very bright early morning sunshine, as seen in the photo below.
