28 June 2005 - Tynemouth and North Shields, Tyne & Wear.

Today we visited Tynemouth and North Shields Fish Quay to take photos for our Tyne Photos website. It was a hot morning and people were enjoying the sun at Longsands Beach, seen in the photo below.

The next photo was taken at the Admiral Lord Collingwood Monument that overlooks the River Tyne at Tynemouth. The cannons belonged to the Admirals Ship the Royal Sovereign, which led the British Fleet into action at the Battle of Trafalgar.

The third photo is a view at North Shields Fish Quay where the Seagulls were waiting to be fed on fish and chips from lunchtime visitors to the quay.

23 June 2005 - Bamburgh, Northumberland Coast.

A very early start today to photograph the sunrise over the North Sea at Bamburgh. The weather forecast was perfect and it turned out to be a spectacular sight as the sky and sea were turned orange from the rising sun.

Below is a view with sun having cleared the horizon, on the right of the picture are the Farne Islands. The second photo is Bamburgh Castle with the low sun reflecting in the windows of one of the towers.

23 June 2005 - Seahouses, Northumberland Coast.

After photographing the sunrise and early morning at Bamburgh, we moved a few miles along the coast to Seahouses.

Some of the Farne Islands tour boats were moored just outside the harbour where a Dolphin was swimming around and regularly surfacing near the boats.

In the view below you can see it's fin looking more like a Shark circling.

23 June 2005 - Boulmer, Northumberland Coast.

After visiting Seahouses we headed further down the coast to Boulmer for a walk along the beach. The beach at Boulmer always seems to have large amounts of seaweed along the high tide mark.

Below is a view along the beach to the cottages which have one of the finest sea views available.

21 June 2005 - Warkworth Beach, Northumberland.

This evening we went for a walk along Warkworth Beach towards Alnmouth. Warkworth beach is one of our favourites, where we often walk as it is one of the best in Northumberland.

Occasionally the wreckage of ships is exposed on the beach and this photo shows the remains of a ship, the identity of which we don't know.

20 June 2005 - Morpeth Castle, Northumberland.

A local outing to Morpeth this morning to take some photos of Morpeth Castle. Not much remains of the castle and the best time to get good photos is in the morning in late Spring and early Summer.

Below is a view of the entrance keep seen from the driveway. The footpath to the right leads down into Carlisle Park.

09 June 2005 - Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne.

A visit to Newcastle upon Tyne today to take photos for our Tyne Photos website from the Tyne Bridge and Quayside.

The view below was taken from the bridge, looking down onto the quayside where an open top tour bus was departing. Note the Seagull at the top of the picture looking ready to take advantage of the targets on the top deck!

08 June 2005 - Butterwell, Northumberland.

A massive and extremely ugly opencast coal site at Butterwell in Northumberland closed recently and has been landscaped. Unfortunately another is planned for Cramlington not far away, so this week we were taking some before and after photos in both locations.

Opencast mines, although awful during work are usually reinstated very well and this Butterwell is no exception with a golf course and country park being created.

Below is a photo at the Butterwell site with a quite unusual looking cow and her calves enjoying the sunshine. We didn't venture into her field as her horns looked more like those of a Spanish fighting bull!

07 June 2005 - Holburn and Swinhoe Lakes, Northumberland.

Today we went for a walk to St. Cuthbert's Cave and Swinhoe Lakes in north Northumberland. The walk was photographed and added to our Northumberland Walks website.

This is a great walk in countryside that is not visited by the masses and offers very varied walking from forest tracks and country lanes to open fells.

St. Cuthbert's Cave is where the body of St. Cuthbert was said to have been rested overnight while being taken from Holy Island to his final resting place at Durham Cathedral. It is seen in the photo below.

The next photo is at nearby Cockenheugh where there are some unusual rock buttresses that resemble laughing faces, depending on the way you are looking at them.

The third photo is at Swinhoe Lakes, the halfway point of our walk. The final photo is a view from the road to Holborn looking towards the Cheviot Hills which was taken on our journey to the area.

A visit to the Cramlington area to take some photos before opencast mining starts. Below is a view towards Shotton, proposed location for the new mine.
