Les + Jan Bell - Photographers Diary - Aug. 2005

29 August 2005 - Harwood, Northumberland.

This evening we walked in Harwood Forest which lies to the south of the Simonside Hills. Few people were about in this large and tranquil forest with it's few remote dwellings.

Below is a view of the clearing at Redpath, on the track that leads to Fallowlees and on to Fontburn Reservoir.

26 August 2005 - St. Mary's Lighthouse, Tyne & Wear Coast.

This morning we had an early rise to visit St. Mary's Island and Lighthouse to take photos at sunrise. St. Mary's Island used to be part of Northumberland but was just south of the boundary formed when Tyne & Wear was created.

The tide was out when we arrived but was rising and it soon covers the causeway once it reaches a certain height.

Below are two views of the lighthouse, one at sunrise with the tide low and the second a couple of hours later with the causeway covered.

25 August 2005 - Low Chibburn, Northumberland.

Today we walked to the remains of Low Chibburn between Widdrington Village and the coast at Druridge Bay. Hundreds of years ago this was a chapel and hospital before becoming a Dower House for Widdrington Castle which was burned by French invaders in 1691. Few people probably know of it's existence, even fewer know of the past existence of a castle at Widdrington.

Below is a view of the remains, which are accessible to the public via a footpath through fields and over stiles.

19 August 2005 - Bothal, Northumberland.

A walk along the often overgrown footpath through the fields to Bothal Village today. This is a pleasant walk in dry sunny weather and also in the winter on the now rare occasions when snow has fallen.

Below is a view looking back towards the farm on the road from Pegswood.

18 August 2005 - Royal Quays Marina, North Shields, Tyne & Wear.

This afternoon we visited Royal Quays Marina at North Shields to take some photos for our Tyne Photos website. Later we also visited the nearby Royal Quays Shopping Centre.

The marina is a very pleasant place and the apartments that surround it have very nice views from their small balconies. The water level in the marina is kept at a constant level by a lock that separates it from the River Tyne.

Below is a view of a boat entering the lock to leave the marina.

17 August 2005 - Rothley, Northumberland.

This afternoon we walked to Rothley Castle as part of a circular walk to be added to our Northumberland Walks website.

The castle is actually a folly and there are not much in the way of buildings, but the view from the top of the hill is one of the finest in Northumberland.

Below is a photo of the superb view looking towards Simonside and Harwood Forest.

17 August 2005 - Amble, Northumberland.

This evening we visited Amble Harbour where a dredger has been at work on the River Coquet. Finished it's work for the day, the boat is seen below moored at Amble Quayside on a very calm and warm night.

16 August 2005 - Pegswood, Northumberland.

There was a very nice sunrise this morning with the sun appearing like a fireball over the horizon.

In the photo below, a flock of racing pigeons were taking an early morning flight and appear to be circling above the sun. In the background, a number of miles away, are the chimneys of the Alcan aluminium smelter and power station at Lynemouth on the Northumberland coast.

06 August 2005 - Bothal, Northumberland.

This afternoon we walked to Bothal Village. The view of the field in the photo below is one we have often taken in various formats as it always seems to reflect the seasons very well, in this case summer crops.

05 August 2005 - North Blyth, Northumberland.

This morning we went to North Blyth to take some views of the River Blyth. This view, taken at the site of one of the old Blyth Ferries has changed almost out of all recognition from years ago, when giant coal staithes dominated the view and the Seven Stars Pub, a Vaux house, used by locals and sailors sat at the riverside.

02 August 2005 - Alnwick, Northumberland.

This morning we visited Alnwick early in the morning to take photos of Alnwick Castle from across the River Aln, a popular location for local photographers.

Afterwards we took a walk around the town while the streets were still almost empty to take some photos for the Alnwick section of our Northumberland Photos website.

Below is a view from the cobbled area of Bondgate Within to the junction with Market Street.
