Les + Jan Bell - Photographers Diary - April 2005

30 April 2005 - Warkworth Beach, Northumberland Coast.

Today we walked along the beach from Warkworth to the River Aln at Alnmouth to take photos for our Northumberland Photos website. It was a lovely warm Spring day with clear blue skies overhead.

There are still many anti-tank blocks on the beaches of Northumberland and this section of beach has a particularly good example of a long row of them.

Here is a view from the dunes looking south along the beach towards Amble.

22 April 2005 - Broadstruther and Carey Burn, Cheviot Hills, Northumberland.

This morning we visited the Cheviot Hills with the intention of taking some early morning views of the hills in the sunshine that was forecast. Unfortunately the sunshine was above a thick layer of mist.

We still walked up to Broadstruther which is a very eerie place in thick mist, as can be seen from the photo below and not a place for those who don't know these hills when it's like that.

We returned along the Carey Burn but the mist persisted although not as thick so we didn't get the photos we wanted today.

19 April 2005 - Blanchland, Northumberland.

Today we visited Blanchland in South Northumberland for a walk around the nearby moors and returning along the River Derwent at the border with County Durham. The weather was changeable and it changed from sunny to dull!

Below are views of the moors near Pennypie House and the River Derwent at Baybridge.

16 April 2005 - Bothal, Northumberland.

After a day of very heavy rain the rivers in Northumberland were running very high. The River Wansbeck at Bothal weir is always worth a visit in these conditions as it turns from a gentle flow to a raging torrent.

Here is a view of the weir with the fish ladder definitely not in use today! Compare it to the view at Morpeth a few miles upstream only three days before.

13 April 2005 - Morpeth, Northumberland.

A visit to Morpeth today for a walk along the River Wansbeck in Carlisle Park on a fine Spring day. Below is a view along the river to the weir and footbridge with St. Georges Church in the background.

11 April 2005 - Nunriding, Northumberland.

Nunriding is a place where we regularly walk, a few miles from Morpeth along country roads and tracks.

Today we walked through the woods towards Newton Mill, a very muddy path after rain. Below is a view from the path to the woods looking towards Newton Underwood.

05 April 2005 - Druridge Bay, Northumberland Coast.

Today we visited the south end of Druridge Bay for a walk behind the dunes and returning along the beach. This is one of the many fine beaches in Northumberland, popular with walkers all year round.
