29 November 2010 - Morpeth, Northumberland.

Plenty of deep snow when we visited Morpeth today for shopping and a walk along the River Wansbeck. In the first photo below, looking towards Telford Bridge the snow was almost knee deep on the river bank.

The second photo is a view from Telford Bridge looking downstream towards Morpeth Library. In the third photo the bowling greens in Carlisle Park had a perfect covering of untouched snow.

The fourth photo is a view along the riverside footpath between Carlisle Park and Oldgate Bridge followed by a view across the river at Oldgate Bridge.

28 November 2010 - Bothal and Pegswood, Northumberland.

This afternoon after more snow we went for another late afternoon walk to the River Wansbeck, this time to the weir at Bothal. Shortly after we left the sun was setting, producing a fiery orange sky to the west, as seen in the first photo below. In the second photo, looking east, some colour was also coming into the sky.

In the woods by the weir the light was fading quickly, but was still bright enough for strong reflections in the river, as seen in the third photo below. The fourth photo is a view of the path between the sawmill and the weir where the snow was very deep.

On the way back there was another heavy snow shower which soon covered the roads, seen in the last photo of the railway bridge at Pegswood.

27 November 2010 - Heavy Snow at Bothal and Pegswood, Northumberland.

This afternoon after more heavy snow (11 inches measured in our garden) we walked down to the River Wansbeck at Bothal.

As we passed over the railway at Pegswood a passenger train travelling south was whipping up the snow along the track, as seen in the first photo below. In the second photo dark snow clouds over Ashington told of what was to come and it soon arrived!

The third photo is a view of two horses beside Bothal Castle at sunset, followed by a view of a young Cormorant perched on the suspension bridge over the River Wansbeck. The last photo is a view towards Climbing Tree Farm after sunset.

25 November 2010 - Snow at Bothal + Pegswood, Northumberland.

This morning winter arrived after heavy overnight snowfall, so we left for an early walk to Bothal to take some photos.

The first photo below is a view of the early morning train to Newcastle arriving at Pegswood Station, on time, in the snow. The second photo is a view of binmen emptying bins at Bothal where some cars were having difficulty getting up the hills out of the village.

The third photo is a view of Bothal from the footpath through the fields to Pegswood, followed by another view further along when the sun managed to peep through the clouds for a short while. The last photo is a view of traffic moving slowly on snow covered roads near Pegswood Roundabout.

18 & 19 November 2010 - Pegswood Station, Northumberland.

A rail excursion headed by the steam loco Tornado passed through Pegswood yesterday on it's way to Edinburgh. Today it passed through in the opposite direction on a circular tour via Newcastle and Carlisle and back to Edinburgh.

The first two photos below show the Tornado travelling north followed by two photos of it travelling south. The last photo is a view of a freight train that passed by as we waited for the steam train.

13 November 2010 - Nunriding, near Morpeth, Northumberland.

This afternoon we visited Nunriding, near Morpeth for a walk along quiet country roads and tracks. It was another beautiful, sunny Autumn afternoon, perfect for walking in the countryside.

The first photo below is a view of the footpath to Nunriding Moor followed by a view along the road to Nunriding Moor. The next two photos are views of the tall pines at Nunriding Moor with the new moon rising above them.

06 November 2010 - Walk to Bothal in Northumberland.

This afternoon we walked to Bothal in fine Autumn sunshine. While many trees were bare some were still hanging onto their golden colour as seen in the first photo below. In the second photo the trees were bare but the fields were green again with winter crops growing strongly.

The fourth photo is a view of Bothal Castle with a small flock of sheep gathered in the field below. The last photo is a view of the sculpture at Pegswood Roundabout, named "Fire" but also dubbed Robin of Pegswood. The black and white football shirt appeared after the recent match between Newcastle and Sunderland.

03 November 2010 - Druridge Bay Walk, Northumberland Coast.

This morning we visited Druridge Bay for a walk along the beach. Although it was nearly high tide we still had time to make it along to Ladyburn Lake without being forced to walk on the shingle below the dunes, which is hard going. There weren't many people about, only a few walkers and dog owners.

Below are two views looking north along the beach near high tide, followed by two views from the dunes, taken a bit further down the bay.

01 November 2010 - Morpeth Town Walk, Northumberland.

Today we took some photos in Morpeth and visited a location we had never been to - the Old Bakehouse Millennium Green. Hidden away behind Newgate Street this is a small garden which would be a pleasant place to sit on a warm summer day.

The first two photos below are views of Morpeth Stepping Stones looking in both directions across the River Wansbeck. The second two photos are views of the Old Bakehouse Millennium Green and a mosaic compass in the paving. There are several other mosaics created by local children.
