27 May 2010 - Spittal Coast Walk, Northumberland.

This evening we walked along the coast south of Spittal during and after a very heavy rain shower. The sky was very dark, but as earlier in the day, the sun appeared and a rainbow formed over the coast, as seen in the first photo below.

In the second photo below a high speed train was passing along the coast lit up by the bright sun against the dark sky and in the third photo another train is seen passing by with Berwick Pier in the background.

The last two photos are views from Spittal Promenade looking towards the cliffs.

27 May 2010 - Berwick, Northumberland.

This afternoon we visited Berwick Town Centre. We parked at Tweedmouth and walked across Berwick Old Bridge in between the very heavy showers that were frequently passing over. The sunny intervals between showers gave some opportunities for sunshine and dark sky photos.

The first photo below is a view down the River Tweed with very dark clouds overhead. The second photo is a view of Tweedmouth War Memorial with the Royal Tweed Bridge in the background.

The third photo is a view at the top of Hide Hill where the sun was lighting up the brightly painted buildings against the very dark sky. The last two photos are views of Berwick Old Bridge and the Royal Tweed Bridge as another shower was approaching from the west.

26 May 2010 - Spittal Cliff Walk, Northumberland.

This evening we walked along the cliffs from Spittal towards Cocklawburn, a walk with great views along the coast in both directions. We turned inland towards Scremerston, crossing the railway and returned along a footpath through the fields overlooking the coast.

The first photo below is a view from the car park at Spittal where a crow was making use of the Lowry Trail information board. The second photo is a view along the beach and promenade at Spittal. The next three photos are views from the clifftop footpath and the last photo is a view of the path from Scremerston to Spittal.

25 May 2010 - Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland.

This afternoon we were out for a walk at Berwick, visiting the "Little Beach" beside the pier, where we took some updated photos for our Northumberland Beaches website. We also stopped at Tweedmouth to take some photos of the River Tweed from the jetty beside the Lifeboat Station.

The first two photos below are views across the River Tweed, followed by a view past the Lifeboat Station to Spittal and the landmark chimney. The next two photos are views of the Little Beach beside Berwick Pier.

21 May 2010 - Cambois, Northumberland.

This afternoon we visited Cambois to take some photos along the dunes, beach and railway. What started as a fine sunny day turned hazy and not very good weather for the photos we had in mind.

The first photo below is a view of a fully laden coal train leaving Battleship Wharf in the Port of Blyth. Years ago fully laden coal trains ran the opposite way along this line to drop their loads in waiting ships when Blyth was one of the busiest coal exporting ports in Europe.

The second photo is a view looking north from the dunes beside the railway, towards Sandy Bay and on to Newbiggin. The third photo is a view of the very small Church of St. Andrew on the other side of the road from the railway at Cambois.

15 and 17 May 2010 - Pegswood Station.

A steam hauled excursion was travelling on the East Coast Main Line this weekend to Edinburgh on Saturday and returning south again on Monday. The train was headed by no. 60019 Bittern and was travelling quite fast in both directions.

The train is pictured below passing through Pegswood Station where the noise on the platform was deafening. The second two photos show it approaching Pegswood from the north, producing plenty of smoke.

09 May 2010 - Wansbeck Riverside Park, Sheepwash.

Today we visited Sheepwash for a walk along the River Wansbeck through Wansbeck Riverside Park. This is a pleasant countryside walk close to urban areas on either side of the river, but you would hardly notice that most of the time. The river used to be tidal here, but that ended many years ago when the Wansbeck Barrage was built.

Below are four photos taken from the riverside footpath between Sheepwash Bridge and Stakeford Bridge on a warm, sunny spring afternoon.

08 May 2010 - Cambois.

A steam hauled passenger excursion was scheduled to travel along the freight line to Cambois and North Blyth today, so we made a visit to photograph this rare event.

Unfortunately the steam engine suffered a failure and the train never made it. Instead it turned to Morpeth from Bedlington Station, hauled by a diesel and missed out this section of the tour. Tough on those travelling on board. Below are two views taken from the Northumberland Spine Road bridge which would have included the train if it had made it.

The third photo is a view of the nearby coast where Dandelions were flowering profusely and brightening up a mostly overcast day.

03 May 2010 - Blyth South Beach Walk.

Today we visited Blyth for a walk along the beach to the harbour. Although it was fine and sunny there was a very cold northerly wind blowing, but there were still a lot of visitors and the car park was almost full.

The first two photos below are views taken from between the piers where there was a bit of shelter from the wind. The third photo was taken from the jetty between the piers where there was no shelter!

The fourth photo is a view of the west pier followed by a view of the promenade above Blyth South Beach where some people were even wearing shorts!
