26 September 2009 - Bothal, Northumberland.

This afternoon we walked to Bothal in Northumberland to take some more test photos with a new compact camera.

The first photo below is a view of Bothal Castle taken with the camera held above head height looking over a hedge. The next three photos are views taken from the footpath through the fields between Pegswood and Bothal, where sheep and horses were grazing happily in the late afternoon sun.

17 September 2009 - Eden Valley Walk, Cumbria.

This evening we went for a walk along quiet country roads and forest trails in the Eden Valley near Armathwaite. The sky was a bit hazy after a warm afternoon, but we wanted to try out a new compact camera.

Below are two views looking over the Eden Valley towards the hills between Penrith and Alston. The third photo is a view down a country lane followed by two forest views taken in High Stand Plantation.

12 September 2009 - Pegswood, Northumberland.

A new sculpture has been erected on the roundabout at the east end of the Pegswood bypass. It has been dubbed "Robin of Pegswood" and features a miner on top of a steel girder, firing a shovel from a longbow.

Opinions on this will no doubt vary but in the evening sunlight it made a good photographic subject as the sun reflected on the shiny shovel.

Below are a horizontal and two vertical photos of "Robin of Pegswood"

11 September 2009 - Port of Blyth, Northumberland.

This afternoon we visited Blyth to take some photos around the port. Unfortunately the sunny weather changed to overcast and hazy. Instead we settled for a few photos taken from Bates Jetties.

The first photo below shows the Cape Henry, another container ship that has arrived at Blyth for a long term berth. Behind it, a small cargo ship, Bravery, was being loaded.

In the next two photos the Bravery is seen leaving Battleship Wharf and sailing down the River Blyth past Alcan Quay.

09 September 2009 - Grindon Lough, Northumberland.

After we visited Haltwhistle today we stopped at Grindon Lough on the road to Newbrough. This is a small lake just south of the Roman Wall near Housesteads Fort, which can be easily seen from the roadside.

The first two photos below are views of the lake, followed by a view to Housesteads Fort with the Roman Wall just visible in the tree-line on the ridge.

The last two photos were taken further along the road near Newbrough where fields were being harvested.

09 September 2009 - Haltwhistle Town + River Walk, Northumberland.

Today we visited Haltwhistle in the South Tyne Valley to take updated photos for our Northumberland website. We walked from the town centre across the river to Bellister Castle ruins and back along the riverside road, crossing over the old stone viaduct that once carried the railway to Alston.

The first photo below is a view along the River South Tyne to the viaduct followed by a view from the top of the viaduct to the A69 road bridge. The third photo is a view from Bellister Bridge to a fine row of houses on the north bank of the River South Tyne.

The fourth photo is a view along the railway to Haltwhistle Station - once a busy junction, now just a halt. The last photo is a view of some cattle lazing happily in the sunshine beside the nearby Military road.

07 September 2009 - Nunriding Moor Walk, Northumberland.

This afternoon, we walked along quiet country roads at Nunriding near Morpeth, one of our favourite local walking places. Fields were being harvested and some were already ploughed for the next crop.

The first photo below is a view towards the tree lined gorge where the River Font flows on it's way to join the River Wansbeck at Mitford. The next two photos are views along the quiet country lane, followed by a view along the farm track to Nunriding Moor.

The last photo is a view of freshly ploughed fields looking towards Quarry House.
