Les + Jan Bell - Photographers Diary - May 2009

29 May 2009 - Port of Blyth, Northumberland.

This afternoon we visited Blyth again to take more photos at the South Harbour, Town Quay and Bates Jetties.

The first photo below is a view of the South Harbour and marina where yachts were coming and going in the very fine weather. Fishing boats were also returning to port as seen in the next two photos of the east pier and harbour.

Further up the river the cargo ship OSC Victoriadiep was unloading aluminium ore at Alcan Quay, seen in the fourth photo. The next two photos are views across the river to Baltic Wharf, seen from the shore beside Bates Jetties. The last photo is a view of the cargo ship Kielder at Baltic Wharf.

22 May 2009 - Port of Blyth, Northumberland.

This afternoon we visited Blyth to take some photos of various cargo ships visiting the port..

The first two photos below are views across the river towards the Alcan ore terminal where empty and full rail trucks were being shunted to and from the sidings.

The next two photos are views towards Battleship Wharf where two cargo ships, the Kaili and Douwent were berthed. In the background another cargo ship the Kielder is a long term visitor. The last two photos are views of the cargo ship Arklow Rover unloading aluminium ore at Alcan quay, which was being loaded into the rail trucks seen in the first photo for movement to the smelter at Lynemouth.

19 May 2009 - East Coast Main Line, Pegswood Station, Northumberland.

This afternoon a steam engine, Sir Nigel Gresley was due to pass through Pegswood, returning after hauling an excursion train to Scotland a few days earlier.

As the engine was only pulling a single coach we decided to take some photos from the northbound platform of the station as it passed under the bridge, seen in the first two photos below. While we waited a few passenger trains passed by, two of which are seen in the next two photos.

18 May 2009 - East Coast Main Line, Pegswood, Northumberland.

This morning a passenger excursion train hauled by a steam engine, the Union of South Africa was due to pass through Pegswood heading south to London Kings Cross.

We decided to take some photos from the bridge beside the station as the train rounded the bend from Longhirst, with a good head of steam, as seen in the first two photos below. Earlier a couple of diesel passenger trains passed by, seen in the next two photos.

11 May 2009 - Dove Crag Walk, Simonside Hills, Northumberland.

This afternoon we walked to Dove Crag in the Simonside Hills near Rothbury. From the top of Dove Crag the views are quite spectacular on a clear day, with the Cheviot Hills visible to the north west and the Northumberland coast visible to the east.

The first four photos below are from the top of the crags including a view to nearby Rothbury in the Coquet Valley below. The fifth photo is a view of the profusely flowering Gorse on the road to Simonside from Netherwitton.

08 May 2009 - Port of Blyth, Northumberland.

Returning from a business meeting this afternoon we stopped at Blyth to take some photos of ships unloading at Baltic Wharf.

There were two ships, a large Russian vessel, the Dmitriy Pozharskiy unloading coal and the much smaller Wilson Lista that was shortly due to leave. These are seen in the first three photos below.

The fourth photo is a view down the River Blyth to the large container ship, Cala Ponente, now mothballed waiting for a cargo. The last two photos, taken within a few minutes of each show how quickly the weather was changing from blue skies to dark grey, while the sun still shone overhead lighting up the boats and ships.

02 May 009 - Seaton Sluice, Northumberland.

Today we visited Seaton Sluice for a walk along the beach to the harbour and headland. It was a lot warmer than our last visit to the other end of this beach at Blyth, but still not shirt sleeve weather.

The first photo below is a view along the beach to the harbour, followed by a view of the harbour at low tide with the water level very low and shallow enough that some people were walking across the entrance with wellies.

The next two photos are views from the rocks looking south to St. Mary's Island and north to Blyth, followed by a final view along the beach to Blyth.
