Les + Jan Bell - Photographers Diary - March 2009

29 March 2009 - Nunriding, Northumberland.

This afternoon we visited Nunriding in Northumberland for a walk along quiet country lanes and paths. It was a sunny afternoon with white fluffy clouds criss-crossed with jetstreams that always seem to look nice in photos.

The first three photos below are views taken along the path to Nunriding Moor followed by three photos taken along the road to Nunriding Hall.

23 March 2009 - Morpeth, Northumberland.

Today we visited Morpeth on business and as it was a fine day we took a compact camera to take a few photos while we were there. Below are five views of the River Wansbeck beside Telford Bridge.

The first photo is a view across the River to St. Georges Church and the second is a view of the recently re-opened Chantry. The third photo is a view of the footbridge (Morpeth Old Bridge) followed by a view of Telford Bridge. The last photo is a view downstream from Telford Bridge.

21 March 2009 - Druridge Bay Nature Reserve Walk, Northumberland Coast.

This afternoon we visited Druridge Bay nature reserve for a walk along the beach to Ladyburn Lake, returning by the track behind the dunes. It was a hazy afternoon and quite cold, compared to recent days in the Borders.

The first two photos below are views along the dunes followed by a view of an RAF rescue helicopter which passed overhead on it's way back to base at Boulmer. The next three photos are views of some young Highland Cattle in one of the fields beside the ponds at East Chevington.

19 March 2009 - Talla Reservoir, Scottish Borders.

This afternoon we visited Talla Reservoir which is a few miles from Megget Reservoir in the Scottish Borders. This is another stunning location and the drive over the pass and down the very steep road to the reservoir provides fantastic views, but you need good brakes!!

The first photo below is a view of Talla Reservoir from the road above the waterfalls. The second photo is a view in the opposite direction looking up Talla Water from the same place. The third photo is a view of the bridge at Talla Linnfoots followed by a view looking back to the steep road clinging to the side of the hills.

The fourth and fifth photos are views of the reservoir valve tower and overspill outlet followed by a final view looking back along the lake.

19 March 2009 - Megget Reservoir, Scottish Borders.

This afternoon we visited Megget Reservoir in the Scottish Borders. Hidden away in a beautiful valley along a single track road, this is great place to visit for peace and tranquility. There are a number of parking places and picnic spots, all with great views of the lake and information boards telling visitors about the reservoir and history of the valley dating back to the Border Rievers and earlier.

The first three photos below are views from the footpath along the dam looking to the hills, still with snow in places and down the valley towards St. Mary's Loch. The next two photos show the dam and valve tower seen from the viewpoint near Hunter Hill, followed by a view along the reservoir from the viewpoint near Linghope Burn. The last photo is view to the Reservoir and Meggethead from the road to Talla Reservoir.

18 March 2009 - Melrose and Gattonside Walk, Scottish Borders.

This afternoon we walked from Melrose, past the abbey and across the River Tweed via the Chain Bridge suspension footbridge to Gattonside, returning by Lowood Bridge and south bank of the river.

The first photo below is a view of the Chain Bridge from the south bank of the river at Melrose, followed by a view of Daffodils along the road to the bridge and a view along the bridge itself. The fourth photo is a view from Gattonside to Melrose and the Eildon Hills. The fifth photo is a view looking upstream from Lowood Bridge. The last two photos are a view of Melrose Abbey and a view of the Melrose Rugby Club with Gattonside in the distance.

18 March 2009 - Scott's View, Scottish Borders.

After taking photos at Leaderfoot we visited Scott's View, a short distance along the River Tweed. This was one of the favourite viewpoints of the famous Scottish novelist and poet, Sir Walter Scott, who is buried nearby at Dryburgh Abbey. It is easy to see why he loved the view so much with River Tweed deep in the valley below and the Eildon Hills in the distance.

Below are four photos taken from the hillside below the roadside viewpoint.

18 March 2009 - Leaderfoot Viaduct, Scottish Borders.

This morning we visited Leaderfoot near St. Boswells and Melrose in the Scottish Borders. Leaderfoot is the location of Trimontium, a Roman settlement and amphitheatre. It is also the location of the Leaderfoot Viaduct which carried the railway over the River Tweed to Greenlaw and Duns, joining the East Coast main line at Reston.

The first two photos below are views of the viaduct and River Tweed, followed by a view along the top of the viaduct from the south end. The fourth photo is a view of the viaduct overlooking the site of the Roman Amphitheatre. The fifth photo is a view of the old and new road bridges over the River Tweed downstream from the viaduct.

15 March 2009 - Blyth South Beach Walk, Northumberland.

On a dull Sunday afternoon we visited Blyth for a walk along the beach to the harbour. Unfortunately the gate from the beach to the harbour was barred off, possibly to stop drifting sand which had almost reached the top of the harbour wall. Or perhaps there was another reason? We didn't bother climbing over the wall or pier fence to the harbour and took some photos of fishing boats returning to port instead.

The four photos below show fishing boats passing the piers and lighthouse. The last photo is a view of the blocked harbour entrance gate, seen from the beach.

06 March 2009 - Seaton Sluice Beach, Northumberland.

This afternoon we visited another beach for more photos to make the most of the fine weather. We walked along the dunes from Blyth then down onto the beach to Seaton Sluice. The tide was out and there were many people out walking with lots of dogs playing in the sea. Below are three views towards Seaton Sluice and a view towards Blyth and the piers.

06 March 2009 - Boulmer, Northumberland.

This morning after visiting Alnmouth we drove a short distance along the coast to Boulmer to take some more photos for our Northumberland website. There were few people about and the beach, which always seems to have a lot of seaweed on it, was empty.

The first photo below shows some of the seats above the beach, a nice place to relax on a fine day. The next three photos are views of the beach and the old tractors still in use to haul the fishing cobles in and out of the sea. The last photo is a view of the tiny church at Boulmer.

06 March 2009 - Alnmouth, Northumberland.

This morning we visited Alnmouth to take photos for our Northumberland website. After a cold frosty start it soon became milder under the clear blue sky. We visited Church Hill on the south side of the River Aln before heading to Alnmouth Beach on the north side.

The first photo below is a view of the wooden cross on the hill with Alnmouth in the background. The second photo is a view of the ruined mortuary chapel below the hill. The third photo is a view across the river from the top of the hill.

The fourth photo is a view across the mouth of the River Aln, followed by two views of Alnmouth Beach.
