30 August 2008 - Tynemouth.

This afternoon we visited Tynemouth where it was dull and cold in the brisk wind on the headland. After a short walk along the River Tyne towards North Shields we returned to watch some ships leaving the river.

The cruise liner Boudicca was leaving on a trip to Iceland and Greenland and the passengers on deck were already getting a taste of the cold weather ahead! The ship is seen in the first four photos below. Shortly beforehand the DFDS Ferry, King of Scandinavia, left for Norway, seen in the next three photos.

29 August 2008 - Blyth, Northumberland.

This morning we visited Blyth town centre and although it was a dull morning we also went for a walk to the South Harbour.

There were plenty of small boats coming and going from the harbour and further up the river. The first photo below shows some of them passing each other beside the east pier lighthouse. In the second photo the yacht was seen leaving the harbour in front of some boats that were recently carrying out work on the offshore wind turbines.

The third photo shows the cargo ship Marc Mitchell being loaded with containers and the fourth photo is a view of yachts and fishing boats moored in the harbour. The last photo is a view of the piers from the harbour wall.

25 August 2008 - Riverside Walk, Warkworth, Northumberland.

This afternoon after visiting Amble we went to Warkworth for a walk around the village and along the riverside. It was busy as the Bank Holiday sunshine brought out many visitors to the popular village.

The first photo below is a view of Warkworth Old Bridge over the River Coquet. The second photo is a view of St. Lawrence Church and the third photo is a view through the village to Warkworth Castle.

25 August 2008 - Amble, Northumberland.

This afternoon was Amble Lifeboat day and the quayside was very busy with the Sunday Market also in full swing. The lifeboats were demonstrating rescue exercises in the river and were lucky to have a very fine day for it.

Below is a view of the all weather lifeboat in the middle of the river at low tide. The second photo is a view of the inshore rescue boat carrying out a "shore rescue" and in the third photo it is towing the all weather boat back up the river in a mock breakdown.

21 August 2008 - Hebron, Northumberland.

Tonight the sky started to become very colourful before sunset so we went out to take some photos near Hebron, a few miles from Morpeth.

Below are three of the sunset photos including a view to the distant Cheviot Hills, showing the quickly changing colours of the sky.

15 August 2008 - North Blyth, Northumberland.

Today we visited North Blyth to take some photos along the coast using a long camera lens to get some different views. From the headland beside the Alcan ore terminal there are long views in each direction, as far as Souter Lighthouse in the south to Newbiggin in the north.

The first two photos below are views to St. Mary's Island and Tynemouth where ships were entering and leaving the River Tyne so close together they were both in the second view. The next two photos are views along Blyth East Pier with it's wind turbines. In the fifth photo repairs were being carried out to one of the turbines in the sea where one of the boats looked ready to sink! (but didn't). The last photo is a view up the River Blyth past the old East Staithes to Bates Jetties.

08 August 2008 - Seaton Sluice, Northumberland.

Today we visited Seaton Sluice for a stroll around the harbour to take some photos for our Northumberland website. Blue skies and high cloud soon turned to very dark threatening clouds but these passed without rain.

Below is a view of the harbour entrance at low tide looking out onto the beach and onwards to Blyth. The second photo is a view in the other direction into the harbour. The third photo is view across the harbour from the road bridge to the Kings Arms, seen also in the last photo.

01 August 2008 - Blyth, Northumberland.

Today we visited the quayside at Blyth to take photos of shipping on the River Blyth. A cargo ship, the Arklow Wind, was due to dock loaded with Aluminium Ore at Alcan Quay on the north side of the river.

The first photo below shows the Arklow Wind heading up the river past the east pier before turning round beside Bates Jetties in the second photo. In the third photo the brightly coloured ship is busy tying up at Alcan Quay. The last photo is a view of Blyth Lifeboat at it's moorings on the south side of the river.
