29 October 2007 - Longhirst Church, Northumberland.

This afternoon we visited the church of St. John the Evangelist at Longhirst, near Morpeth in Northumberland to take some photos for the Churches section of our Northumberland Photo website.

The church itself is in partial shade a lot of the time because like many churches it is surrounded by high trees. At this time of year when the trees are shedding their leaves rapidly a carpet forms outside the church.

At a certain time of day the leaves are lit up by the low sun shining between the church tower and the trees as caught in the photo below.

27 October 2007 - Amble, Northumberland Coast.

Once again we headed to Amble for one of our regular strolls around the harbour and pier. There is always something going on around harbours, regardless of the weather.

Amble also has a very busy and popular marina with many boats moored there. The first photo below shows a yacht returning to the River Coquet under very dark skies.

A little later the sky cleared as seen in the second view looking up the River Coquet with Warkworth Castle in the distance.

23 October 2007 - Bothal, Northumberland.

Today we went for a walk to Bothal Village in the late afternoon sun. The bell tower of the ancient church always looks very colourful at this time of year with the red foliage of the tree in front of it, as seen in the photo below.

The second photo shows the nearby castle with a glow from the low sun.

20 October 2007 - Amble, Northumberland Coast.

A late afternoon walk around the harbour at Amble on yet another fine autumn day.

The sea was very calm today, not like the last time we were here a few weeks ago when waves were blasting over the pier. Below is a view of the harbour and the calm sea - move your mouse over the photo to see the difference.

The second photo below is a view up the River Coquet past the marina to Warkworth.

18 October2007 - Cheviot Hills, North Northumberland.

Today we went walking in the Cheviot Hills in North Northumberland near the Scottish Border. It was another fine Autumn day, with hazy sunshine most of the time.

We walked from Hethpool in the College Valley over the hills to Kirknewton, returning alongside the College Burn. At Kirknewton we stopped to visit the church, which like so many country churches is kept immaculate inside and out.

Below is a view from the slopes of Easter Tor, looking to Hethpool and across the College Valley to great Hetha and beyond to the Border Ridge. The second photo is of the Church of St. Gregory the Great at Kirknewton.

11 October 2007 - Scarborough, North Yorkshire Coast.

This afternoon we visited Scarborough on the North Yorkshire Coast. Apart from the extortionate parking charges it was like stepping back in time along the sea front - still like an old fashioned English seaside resort with gift shops, rock, amusement arcades and Donkeys on the beach.

Here are a couple of views, the first is of the harbour entrance and lighthouse. The second photo is a view to the harbour across the beach, complete with Donkeys.

We have a full page of photos from this visit:

10 October 2007 - Whitby, North Yorkshire Coast.

This afternoon we visited Whitby on the North Yorkshire Coast. It was very crowded for a Wednesday in October - more like August Bank Holiday Monday! It seems the extortionate parking charges aren't deterring people as we couldn't find a space and parked at the Abbey, which we were visiting anyway.

Although this wasn't a photo outing we took some anyway. Below is a view of a fishing boat passing one of the piers. The second photo shows the swing bridge at the harbour open while a yacht passes through.

We have two pages of photos from this visit:

10 October 2007 - North Yorkshire Moors.

This week we were visiting the North Yorkshire Moors near Whitby for a few days. The mornings were misty and then cleared to sunshine.

Here is a view from a forest at Low Moor as the morning mist was clearing and blue sky appearing.

05 October 2007 - Port of Blyth, Northumberland.

More sunshine today at the Port of Blyth on the Northumberland Coast where we went to take some photos of shipping on the River Blyth.

Blyth was once one of the largest coal handling ports in Europe where many ships would be loaded up with coal from the East, West and South Staithes and Bates Colliery. Now coal is imported via the new dock at Battleship Wharf where ships used to be dismantled at the old Hughes Bolckow breakers yard.

Below is a photo of a Russian coal ship being unloaded at the new dock.

04 October 2007 - Bothal, Northumberland.

After another sunny Autumn day we went for an evening walk to Bothal shortly before sunset.

As we returned the sun was setting directly behind the large communications mast at Climbing Tree Farm between Bothal and Morpeth. The sky was set ablaze with colour around the farm with the tower looking like a rocket ready to lift off.

02 October 2007 - Ladyburn Lake, Northumberland.

On another beautiful sunny Autumn day we visited Ladyburn Lake at Druridge Bay for a walk around the lake.

There are always plenty of Swans and Geese around the shore of the lake and they are very friendly due to regular feeding by visitors.

On the far side of the lake though, we came across this Swan and her Cygnets all feeding under the water at once. Bottoms up!

01 October 2007 - Rothbury, Northumberland.

On a beautiful sunny Autumn day we visited Rothbury for a walk around the village and along the River Coquet to Thrum Mill. This is a short but very pleasant walk and we shall be adding the photos and description to our Northumberland Walks website in due course.

We started at the car park by the river and crossed by the footbridge to walk along the north bank. Below is a view looking up the River Coquet from the footbridge.
