30 July 2007 - Derwent Reservoir and Blanchland, Northumberland.

Today we visited the Derwent Reservoir which lies on the border between Northumberland and County Durham. We hoped to get some good photos as the weather forecast was for a fine sunny day - it was wrong. The sun peeped through the odd gap in the clouds for a few shots such as the one below, to light the foreground a little against a dark sky beyond.

We moved on to Blanchland, a tiny and very pretty village where we visited the Abbey Church and took a few photos around the village. This view  looks down on the village from the bridge over the River Derwent. The Abbey can be seen in the middle of the photo.

27 July 2007 - River Coquet, Northumberland.

This afternoon we visited Brainshaugh in Northumberland to take some photos of the Priory ruins, the River Coquet and surrounding area. When returning via Warkworth Village we spotted a great viewpoint to the mouth of the River Coquet just as what looked like a huge ocean going tug was passing by.

The sea looked very rough, whipped up by the strong wind that was also doing it's best to shake the long lens used for this view.

24 July 2007 - Seaton Sluice Beach, Northumberland Coast.

We visited Seaton Sluice this afternoon for a walk along the beach as we were nearby on other business. Although the sun was shining the sky elsewhere was dark and threatening and we just got back to the car as a deluge began.

The beach here is very nice and is obviously cleaned by machine. It is quite coarse sand and parts are a very dark golden colour as seen in the photo below looking to the breakwater and harbour entrance.

23 July 2007 - Amble, Northumberland Coast.

We revisited Amble this evening, it was very quiet, even the car park beside the pier was empty.

There was a nice sunset which had attracted other photographers with their tripods set up on the quay. Since we were really just out for a late walk we didn't have a tripod, but managed this hand-held shot of a yacht sailing past the setting sun on it's way upstream towards Amble Marina.

17 July 2007 - Hauxley, Northumberland Coast.

This evening we went for a walk along the beach and dunes at Hauxley on the Northumberland Coast. After some heavy showers the sky cleared to provide some late evening sunshine.

Here is a view of Coquet Island taken in the warm glow of the setting sun.

16 July 2007 - River Tyne, North Shields.

This evening we visited the River Tyne at North Shields for a walk from the Fish Quay along the riverside towards Tynemouth.

As we arrived at the Fish Quay the car and passenger ferry Princess of Norway was preparing to leave the ferry terminal further up the river. A short time later under darkening skies it was sailing down the river, completely dwarfing the riverside buildings as the second photo here shows.

11 July 2007 - Nunriding, Northumberland.

This evening we went for a walk at Nunriding Moor near Morpeth in Northumberland - a place we often visit.

The view along this row of Scots Pines seems to look good all year round as it takes on different colours. Seen here in the warm glow of the late evening sun.

05 July 2007 - Cheswick Beach, Northumberland.

Today we visited the beach at Cheswick in North Northumberland. This must be one of the best beaches in the country with views to Holy Island in the south and beyond Berwick to the Border in the north.

Here is a view looking up the coast at the north end of the beach near Cheswick Black Rocks.

04 July 2007 - Berwick, Northumberland.

Near the end of a day of heavy rain showers at Berwick the sun shone for a while, but above the town were very dark clouds and in the distance the occasional flash of lightning.

Here is a view across the River Tweed with the town still lit by evening sun, but only for a short time before more heavy rain.

03 July 2007 - Spittal, Northumberland Coast.

This evening we walked along the promenade at Spittal on the North Northumbrian Coast. Many years ago it was a popular holiday destination for people in the Borders until the demise of the railway from Kelso.

Here is a view along the promenade and beach looking south to the cliffs in the distance, above which the main East Coast Railway runs.
