Les + Jan Bell - Photographers Diary - Jan. 2005

22 July 2005 - Whittingham, Northumberland.

This evening we visited Whittingham and Alnham to take some photos of the area for our Northumberland Photo website. It was a fine, warm summer evening providing clear views across the surrounding countryside.

Below is a photo of the old railway station that was on the Alnwick to Cornhill branch line. It was unusual for a branch line station because it had an island platform, possibly to facilitate a railway from Rothbury that was never built.

The next photo is of the road to Alnham and the bottom photo is a view from the Cheviot Hills near Alnham.

12 July 2005 - South Shields.

Today we visited South Shields to take photos for our Tyne Photos website. We visited the seafront and pier, as well as the Shields Ferry landing.

Below is a view of a container ship leaving the River Tyne, with Tynemouth Priory in the background, seen from South Shields Pier. The second view shows the ferry Queen of Scandinavia berthed at North Shields with it's rear doors open, ready for vehicle loading.

12 July 2005 - Newcastle upon Tyne.

After our visit to South Shields we headed up the River Tyne through Newcastle. On the way we stopped to take a few photos of the bridges. The view below shows a passenger train crossing the King Edward VII Rail Bridge.

12 July 2005 - Wylam, Northumberland.

Further up the River Tyne in Northumberland we visited Wylam, famous for railways and George Stephenson whose cottage is a short walk away on the south bank of the river.

Below is a view looking north across the River Tyne at Wylam Bridge. The second photos show two trains passing at Wylam Station on the Tyne Valley Line, one heading for Newcastle, the other to Carlisle.
